Left and Right

Left and Right

Left and rights…an easy trick to teach. If you do or plan on doing Hoopers or Agility this is invaluable but also just a neat trick and some brainwork in a small space.

The first thing to remember…you are facing your dog so their left and right is the opposite to yours.

The first step is to show them what you want by ‘luring’, take a treat in your hand and lead them through the turn following the treat…remembering to go both ways. Once they’ve got the idea of that you start to use your command, I use Left & Right. Say the command ‘Left’ and lure round, again make sure you do both ways….however try not to do the same everytime i.e. left, right, left, right…they are clever these dogs and will pattern what you ask.

Next it’s time to wean them off the luring…this part will be easier for dogs that have been taught shaping as part of their training…

Test their understanding of the command…..give your left or right command and wait and see what they do…..they may start to turn…encourage it and reward, they may look at you with a totally blank stare…after a few seconds if they are still confused give them some help…start the lure round but try not to finish it…they need to start to think for themselves, of course reward after every turn. Repeat this reducing how much you ‘lure’ each time…eventually you will say left or right and round they go….jackpot reward!!!!!

An easy game…can be played in the tiniest of spaces and uses their brains.
